Chey Tae-won was born in Suwon in 1960 and trained at Korea University and the University of Chicago before joining SK in 1992. He became chairman of SK Group in 1998 and has since built it into one of South Korea's largest chaebol, with leading positions in memory semiconductors through SK Hynix, batteries through SK On, telecommunications, energy and biotechnology.
He has positioned the group as a central player in the global high-bandwidth memory market driven by AI demand, and has been a sustained public voice on the need for South Korean industry to deepen its position in the next wave of strategic technologies.
