Bruce Flatt was born in Winnipeg in 1965, joined the predecessor of Brookfield in 1990 and became chief executive in 2002. Under his leadership the firm has grown into one of the largest alternative-asset managers in the world, with deep franchises in infrastructure, renewable power, real estate, private equity and credit.

Brookfield's investment posture is distinctly long-duration: the firm specializes in owning and operating real assets across multi-decade cycles, often acquiring out-of-favour positions and rebuilding them with operational discipline. That orientation has made it a structural participant in the financing of the global energy transition, particularly through Brookfield Renewable.

Flatt is unusually low-profile for an executive of his scale and is regarded internally as the keeper of a long, written cultural memory of how the firm has handled previous downturns.
