Albert Bourla was born in Thessaloniki, Greece, in 1961, trained as a veterinarian with a doctorate in biotechnology of reproduction and built his career at Pfizer over more than three decades. He became chief executive in 2019 and chairman the following year.
His tenure has been defined by Pfizer's partnership with BioNTech on the COVID-19 mRNA vaccine, developed and deployed at extraordinary speed, and by the subsequent strategic reinvestment of pandemic-era revenues into a string of acquisitions in oncology, anti-infectives and rare disease, including the multi-billion-dollar purchase of Seagen.
Bourla has become one of the most prominent global voices on the future of mRNA technology platforms and on the role of large pharmaceutical companies in pandemic preparedness.
