Zhang Yiming was born in Fujian, China, in 1983, trained as a software engineer and founded ByteDance in 2012 with a thesis that recommendation algorithms, more than social graphs, would drive the next generation of consumer content. Under his leadership the company built Toutiao, Douyin and TikTok, the latter of which became the defining short-video platform of the decade outside China.
He stepped back from the chief executive role in 2021 to focus on long-term strategy, but remains one of the most influential figures in global consumer technology and the architect of the company's distinctive culture combining engineering rigor with high-tempo product iteration.
