Stéphane Bancel was born in Marseille in 1972, trained as a chemical engineer at École Centrale Paris and Harvard Business School and built his early career at bioMérieux and Eli Lilly before being named chief executive of Moderna in 2011, when the company was a small research-stage venture with an unproven platform.
Under his leadership Moderna spent a decade refining its mRNA platform before deploying it at unprecedented speed during the COVID-19 pandemic, becoming one of two principal providers of authorized mRNA vaccines worldwide. The company has since invested heavily in a broader pipeline including respiratory, latent virus, oncology and rare-disease applications of the same platform.
Bancel has been a defining public voice for the long-term promise of mRNA as a programmable therapeutic class and remains one of the most closely watched executives in biotechnology.
