Pony Ma (Ma Huateng) was born in Guangdong, China, in 1971, trained as a software engineer and co-founded Tencent in 1998. Under his leadership the company built QQ, then WeChat — the super-app at the centre of daily life for over a billion users in China — alongside one of the largest gaming portfolios in the world through Tencent Games and substantial holdings in domestic and international internet companies.
Tencent's strategic posture has combined a deep platform footprint with a long history of patient minority investments in companies including Epic Games, Riot Games and a long roster of Chinese consumer-internet platforms. Ma is widely regarded as the architect of the modern Chinese internet ecosystem and is unusually low-profile relative to his commercial footprint.
