Pony Ma (Ma Huateng) was born in Guangdong, China, in 1971, trained as a software engineer and co-founded Tencent in 1998. Under his leadership the company built QQ, then WeChat, the super-app at the centre of daily life for over a billion users in China, alongside one of the largest gaming portfolios in the world through Tencent Games and substantial holdings in domestic and international internet companies.

Tencent's strategic posture has combined a deep platform footprint with a long history of patient minority investments in companies including Epic Games, Riot Games and a long roster of Chinese consumer-internet platforms. Ma is widely regarded as the architect of the modern Chinese internet ecosystem and is unusually low-profile relative to his commercial footprint.
