Marcos Galperin was born in Buenos Aires in 1971, trained at the Wharton School and Stanford and founded Mercado Libre in 1999, modelling its early marketplace on the auction sites then emerging in the United States. Over the following 25 years he built it into the leading e-commerce platform in Latin America, with the Mercado Pago payments business now operating as one of the region's most significant fintech franchises.
Under his leadership the company has expanded into credit, asset management, logistics and advertising, and remains the highest-valued internet company headquartered in Latin America.
Galperin has become one of the most influential business voices in the region on entrepreneurship, regulation and the future of digital commerce.
