Lee Jae-yong was born in Seoul in 1968, the grandson of Samsung's founder Lee Byung-chull, and trained at Seoul National University, Keio and Harvard. He took on increasingly senior responsibilities across Samsung from the 2000s and was named executive chair of Samsung Electronics in 2022.
His leadership has coincided with one of the most competitive periods in the company's history, with intensified competition in memory semiconductors from SK Hynix and Micron, a major push to close the foundry technology gap with TSMC and a sustained build-out of the smartphone, display and consumer-electronics businesses. Under his tenure Samsung has accelerated AI-related capital expenditure, particularly in high-bandwidth memory.
He is among the most consequential industrial figures in South Korea and a central interlocutor for the country's industrial policy.
