Doug McMillon was born in Memphis in 1966 and joined Walmart as a teenager unloading trucks at a distribution centre. He earned his MBA at the University of Tulsa, rose through merchandising and ran the Sam's Club and Walmart International divisions before being named chief executive of the entire company in 2014.

Under his leadership Walmart has accelerated investment in its online and omnichannel operations, built one of the largest retail-media advertising businesses in the world and used the depth of its supply-chain footprint to remain price-competitive through an extended period of inflationary pressure. The company is the largest private employer in the United States and one of the largest in the world.

McMillon has been an active corporate voice on workforce, wage and supply-chain policy and chaired the Business Roundtable during a period of intense debate over corporate governance and stakeholder responsibilities.
