David Solomon was born in Hartsdale, New York, in 1962 and built an early career at Bear Stearns and Bankers Trust before joining Goldman Sachs as a partner in 1999. He led the firm's investment-banking division and was named chief executive in 2018, becoming chairman the following year.
His tenure has involved a high-profile retreat from the consumer-banking ambitions of the prior strategic period and a sharper recommitment to global investment banking, global markets and asset and wealth management. Goldman remains the leading adviser on the largest cross-border mergers and one of the most consequential underwriters in global capital markets.
Solomon is also known for a public second life as a touring DJ, which has, with varying enthusiasm inside Goldman, become part of the broader public image of the chief executive role.
