Brian Chesky studied industrial design at the Rhode Island School of Design and co-founded Airbnb in San Francisco in 2008 with Joe Gebbia and Nathan Blecharczyk. The company spent its first decade redefining short-stay accommodation as a category and went public in December 2020 in one of the most closely watched listings of the pandemic era.
After the 2020 demand collapse Chesky restructured the company around what he calls a 'founder mode' operating model: smaller teams, a single integrated product roadmap, and a return to design-led, slow-cadence releases. The shift has become widely studied inside Silicon Valley as a counterpoint to the heavily decentralized organizational templates that dominated the previous decade.
He has also become a public advocate for tourism's role in regional economic development, and Airbnb's policy engagement with cities from Barcelona to New York is increasingly a template for how marketplace companies negotiate with municipal regulators.
