Akio Toyoda was born in Nagoya in 1956 and is the grandson of Toyota's founder Kiichiro Toyoda. He served as president of Toyota Motor from 2009 to 2023, navigating the company through the 2010 quality recall crisis, the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and the long debate over the right pace of electrification. He moved to the chairmanship in 2023.
Under his leadership Toyota deepened its hybrid technology lead, made measured commitments to battery-electric vehicles and continued substantial investment in hydrogen as a long-horizon energy carrier — a strategic posture that has been controversial among electric-only advocates but that has tracked the company's competitive position through a difficult market period.
Toyoda remains one of the most influential figures in the Japanese industrial establishment and has used his platform to argue for a multi-pathway view of the energy transition in mobility.
