Ajay Banga was born in Pune, India, in 1959, trained at St. Stephen's College and the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad and built his career at Nestlé, Citigroup and ultimately Mastercard, where he served as chief executive from 2010 to 2020 and presided over the company's transformation into a global payments and technology platform.
He was nominated by the United States and confirmed as president of the World Bank Group in 2023, with an explicit mandate to expand the institution's mission to include the global public goods of climate, pandemic preparedness and fragility, in addition to its historical poverty-reduction focus. Under his leadership the bank has launched a substantial evolution roadmap, including new financing tools, increased lending capacity and deeper private-sector mobilization.
Banga is widely regarded as a connector between private capital, multilateral finance and developing-country governments, and his tenure is being closely watched as a stress test of whether the post-war multilateral architecture can adapt to twenty-first-century challenges.
